With the current smart home craze, some people are still choosing to stay with “dumb” devices, and for good reason! Smart TVs just cannot provide the level of data security that non-smart TVs can.

Besides, regular TVs tend to be easier to use and offer high resolution, just like smart TVs! Read on to learn about the best non-smart TV options on the market right now.

What Is a Non-Smart TV?

Everybody is used to everything being “smart” now. You might not even realize that regular versions of devices still exist. A non-smart TV, for example, is a regular TV, also titled “dumb” by many. A dumb TV doesn’t have an internet connection, thus it doesn’t have the capabilities a smart TV has. There is no HBO or Hulu and you can't connect your Alexa to it.

Why Buy a Non-Smart TV?

Though a non-smart TV doesn’t have all the capabilities we’re used to, people still buy them because of their simplicity. A non-smart TV doesn’t have all the controls a smart TV has; however, you can still get incredible resolution with a regular TV for a fraction of the price of a smart TV.

Besides, smart TVs have the potential to pose a security risk if there are vulnerabilities in your home network and the TV software is exposed and out of date.

Non-Smart TV Decision Factors

Screen Size

Televisions these days come in all shapes and sizes. There is a perfect size for you, and if you know it, then the process of buying a new TV will be much easier for you. It’s harder when you don’t know what size you’re looking for.

You probably know where you’re going to put the TV, so start there. How far will it be from the couch or any other seating area? Naturally, the closer you are to the TV, the smaller it should be.

Resolution

The most popular terms used to define resolution are HD Ready, Full HD, and 4K. HD Ready is the lowest resolution and 4K is the highest. The higher the resolution, the clearer the picture will be. If your budget allows for it, you should always go for 4K or at least Full HD.

HD Ready is not bad per se, especially if you’re watching TV while cooking or doing other tasks. However, you will notice the low resolution if you sit down and pay more attention.

HDR

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range and it’s a feature of many TVs. HDR-compatible televisions offer a brighter and sharper image with a broader color scheme. If that sounds like a dream, it’s because it really is that good. The best part is, HDR-compatible TVs are everywhere, so you can easily get your hands on one.

With more contrast and brighter colors, HDR can really take the viewing experience to the next level. That being said, TVs that don’t feature HDR are not “bad,” but the difference is visible. If your budget allows for it, we recommend a TV with HDR.

Display Technology

TV display technology refers to the display of the television. For years, plasma TVs were the peak of technology. We’re past that now. Today, the choice is mainly between LED LCD and OLED. This category is not black and white and there is no clear winner. You wouldn’t go wrong with buying either an LED or OLED display.

Besides, there are other display technology options that are less popular. Do your research and figure out which option will work best for you and suit your needs.

Ports

Many people don’t check for ports and connectivity when buying a TV, and that’s a big mistake. It’s good to know how many devices you can connect to your television. Most devices use HDMI ports, though some use composite ports.

If you know nothing about ports, then you should look for a TV with at least 4 ports as a rule of thumb. You can’t go wrong with 4. If you have clear needs, you can tailor the number of ports to them.
