As part of our Smart Kitchens series, we review the latest range of smart meat thermometers, for those looking to improve their cooking game!

There’s nothing worse than overcooking a good joint of meat. With wired or wireless probes firmly lodged in place, you get real-time alerts and notifications when the meat hits the target temperature. Devices with multiple probes provide a better picture of what is happening during the cooking process.

There are two types of meat thermometers, Bluetooth devices, and Wi-Fi devices. If you need to leave your home while you are cooking, then with a Wi-Fi meat thermometer, you can still track the temperatures via your phone's 4G/5G data plan.

Decision Factors when Choosing a Smart Meat Thermometer

1. Probe Style

The design of the probe is something that many should take into consideration.

Some of the things you need to look out for when considering the probes are shown in the following list.

  • The temperature resistance
  • The accuracy of readings
  • How many probes a device can support
  • If the probes are identical or colored separately

2. Range (Bluetooth vs Wi-Fi)

The wireless range is going to determine how far you can go if you get called away whilst grilling. Therefore, if you are trying to decide on a smart thermometer, it’s best to determine which type of wireless connectivity option serves you best. The following list shows the various connectivity options you can choose from.

  • Bluetooth which has a range of between 100 – 500 feet
  • Wi-Fi has a range of 330 feet. However, once the device is connected, the data flows through a cloud server so you could be anywhere in the world and see how your meat is cooking! Assuming your smartphone has a signal and a data plan!

3. Display

The display allows you to monitor temperatures directly from the main device. Most smart meat thermometers provide a display for viewing the temperature. However, some displays are not very intuitive as they only display the temperature of a single probe. A display that can output the temperatures of all probes simultaneously gives you more control when cooking.

4. Temperature Tracking

Although most users do not need to track their temperature history when cooking, some users prefer to have a detailed report of their cooking in the past. This helps them identify what went wrong and figure out what to do next time. Most smart meat thermometers that interact with a smartphone app are able to provide users with a temperature history and real-time monitoring. Other devices that use a dedicated wireless device will be able to monitor real-time temperatures – but they cannot show graphs of previous data.

5. Analog vs Digital

Although our list is exclusive to only digital devices, it’s best to know that there are still many analog versions available on the market today. They are generally reliable but they lack the smart features that only their digital versions can offer.

Fully Wireless Probes

The MEATER Plus is incredibly easy to use – just stick it in the meat and let your phone do the rest with its “Guided Cook System”.

Top Features
  • Built-in BT repeater
  • Usage can last up to 24 hours on a single charge
  • Remote control capabilities

The MEATER Plus thermometer has two temperature sensors – one on each end – to measure the meat temperature and the ambient air temperature. These two different temperature readings help gauge how well the meat has been cooked and estimate how long you would need to keep it cooking.

It has an excellent range and the thermometer can sync with smartphones or tablets that are anywhere within 165 feet. Its wireless functionality is also boosted by the use of Meat Link. Meat Link allows you to check on the temperatures using a second device that is in close proximity to the thermometer.

The accompanying MEATER app also provides a guided cooking system that allows you to configure preset modes. After you’ve set a preset configuration, you will also be provided with an estimated time of how long the meat will take to cook.

This device by MEATER can last up to 24 hours on a single charge and can be recharged using just one AAA battery. It also features a magnetic back that allows it to stick to the oven door, making for easy storage.

The Soraken Meat Thermometer is an easy-to-use device with a lightweight control hub.

Top Features
  • Four probes
  • Highly accurate readings
  • 196 feet of range

At a glance, the Soraken Meat Thermometer looks very promising. It features a minimalistic display hub for the sensors where you can toggle to show the current and preset temperatures for each of the probes.

You can connect up to six different probes and monitor them separately with the press of a button. These probes have decent accuracy, even during very high temperatures that are past 500 ℉.

Having six probes and managing them can be quite difficult, so the main hub device has a built-in magnetic backplate, allowing you to stick it to the sides of the grill or oven. No more pulling up chairs or tables for the device.

This device by Soraken comes with a smartphone app that is fairly basic as it allows you to set up alerts or notifications. You can even set up preset profiles for different types of meat. However, the Bluetooth feature is only limited to a range of 196 feet, which can be troublesome when you have to move here and there.

Overall, the Soraken Meat Thermometer is a great device for getting your meat cooked without too many features and controls that may confuse you.

What we liked
  • The Soraken Meat Thermometer features a smartphone app for remote monitoring.
  • It features a magnetic back design.
  • It offers a smaller and cleaner-looking hub.
  • It comes with a high-temperature threshold.

The Govee Bluetooth Meat Thermometer has a 230ft range via Bluetooth

Top Features
  • Two or Six-probe design
  • Remote monitoring capabilities
  • High-temperature threshold

The Govee Bluetooth Meat Thermometer features both a two-probe and six-probe design that allows users to monitor up to six different cuts of meat simultaneously (or lodge multiple probes into the same cut to get an all-around view). If that’s too much, users can also set aside one probe to measure the ambient temperature.

It only has basic smartphone compatibility where it can send out push notifications, however, it can connect to a device that is within 230 feet away via Bluetooth.

Although this device does not come with a ton of smart features, the probes are very reliable in terms of accuracy. They can withstand very high temperatures without losing their accuracy time and time again.

Therefore, if users do not mind a bulky body, the Govee Bluetooth Meat Thermometer is a great option that comes with an affordable price tag.

What we liked
  • The Govee Bluetooth Meat Thermometer features an affordable price.
  • It also features a magnetic back design.
  • This thermometer offers accurate temperature readings.
  • It allows for multiple presets.

The Enzoo relies on the handheld device as it does not have a phone app

Top Features
  • Wireless operation with a dedicated control panel
  • Four separate probes
  • 572 ℉ temperature range

While not technically a “smart home” device, the ENZOO Meat Thermometer is designed for cooking the most heavy-duty cuts of meat.

As is the case with most multi-probed smart meat thermometers on the market, it’s got the usual four-probe design with the probes having a high-temperature resistance and an acceptable level of accuracy.

This device by ENZOO also supports 12 different meat types with 5 presets and has excellent coverage of up to 500 feet.

The only major flaw in this device is the lack of a smartphone app that would allow users to monitor the temperatures and receive notifications via Bluetooth.

  • It comes with highly accurate readings.
  • It offers a separate control panel with a range of 490 feet.

Another Dual Probe Wired Device

The ThermoPro TP20 provides you with all the basics with minimal fuss.

Top Features
  • Range receiver of 300 feet
  • Receiver accessories include a belt clip, stand, and rubber sleeve
  • Separate control / monitoring device

Also not a smart home device, the ThermoPro TP20 is a reliable Bluetooth meat thermometer that is easy to use.

This device includes various accessories such as a built-in countertop stand, belt clip, and rubber sleeve case. This allows you to take it wherever you go and will operate anywhere up to 300 feet from its main hub.

It also has two prongs that can operate well over 500 ℉, making it a durable device that can check meats that are cooked at very high temperatures in the oven.

The lack of a smartphone app to sync with other devices can make it a little difficult to use and hurt its practicality compared to other models.

However, it is still a worthwhile investment if you ever get the chance to get a hold of one.

Top Features
  • Rechargeable 3000 mAh battery
  • High accuracy of ± 1.8 ℉

Therefore, it’s more than enough to handle a full day’s worth of cooking and you can always recharge it quickly and get an adequate charge in just a couple of hours.

The Wi-Fi connectivity also helps with the range if you need to move away from the grill. The Wi-Fi receiver has a range of 328 feet so you won’t need to move the Wi-Fi router too close to your grill.

The smartphone app is also very intuitive. There are dozens of preset temperatures to choose from and you can also view your temperature history at the press of a button. Finally, you can receive notifications from custom timers or when the probes reach the preset temperatures.

The smartphone app is also very intuitive. There are dozens of preset temperatures to choose from and you can also view your temperature history at the press of a button. Finally, you can receive notifications from custom timers or when the probes reach the preset temperatures.

The Verdict

Smart meat thermometers are impressive devices that can help you cook meat correctly. Their remote monitoring features and wireless connectivity allows you to monitor the temperatures of your meat from anywhere. They will also provide notifications and alerts so you can take out the meat when it is perfectly cooked.

However, when shopping for a smart meat thermometer, it’s always best to learn their specifications, such as the app functionality, wireless range, and the number of probes, before committing to them.
