Changing your Honeywell thermostat back to how it was at the start is pretty easy. If you're looking for a step-by-step way to do this right, you've hit the jackpot!
With a factory, schedule, or Wi-Fi reset, you can revert the thermostat to default settings and clear out any errors or glitches.
So in this guide, I’ll show you how to reset a Honeywell thermostat. Let’s go!
In some cases, the instructions require you to remove the thermostat from its base plate, potentially exposing live wiring. If you come across this requirement, we recommend you isolate the wires beforehand via the circuit breaker box.
At SmartHomePerfected we always advise readers not to undertake any work they are not competent in performing and if in any doubt, it is best to seek the assistance of a professional.
Honeywell Thermostat Reset: How to Find the Model Number
Before we get into the specifics, the first thing you should do is find the exact model number of your Honeywell thermostat. This can help speed things up since you can breeze through our guide and find the steps to reset your specific model.
In the guide below, I've included images of Honeywell Thermostats within each range to make it easy to identify the correct one.
Generally speaking, the model name or number of your thermostat is either referenced on the front of the device, is accessible through the digital interface, or printed on a label at the back.
Below are steps to perform, if you need to remove the thermostat from the base plate to access the model number.
- If your home thermostat is mains powered, isolate the circuit via the circuit breaker to avoid exposure to live wiring. (Once the power is off, the thermostat may still be on as some models have a battery backup. Some models have a battery door that you can slide up to remove the batteries. For others, the batteries are installed in the back of the faceplate).
- Carefully slide/pull the thermostat off the base plate, making sure not to damage the pins or clips. In some models, this is accomplished by pulling from the bottom of the device.
- Take note of the model at the back and find the corresponding instructions below.
- Reposition the thermostat back onto the base plate.
Model-Specific Instructions

I have a T6 thermostat installed at a second home. The phone app shows the thermostat offline, is there a way to reset the WiFi without being in front of the thermostat? Have confirmed the WiFi is working and it will be a while before I am back at the property and hope there is a way to do this with a PC rather than the app. Any suggestions?
JB
The instructions on your site worked! I needed to perform a factory reset on a thermostat (WiFi enabled 6000 series) but I could not find the instructions anywhere I looked, including manuals. The instructions here were quick and easy, thanks.
Potential correction for your steps: “Honeywell 6000 Wi-Fi models” step 6. Pressing down did not work for me, pressing up did. Step 7 I did not need to press and hold, just press.

Thanks JB! Glad the instructions helped.
Appreciate the correction, I’ve updated the 6000 series instructions based on your message.
Best of luck!
