During our webinar series, I conducted a thorough evaluation of advanced thermostat systems which included a detailed examination of user manuals for Hunter thermostats.
While primarily focused on ceiling fans, the Hunter Fan Company (originally directly and more recently through licensing partners) produces thermostats under the “Home Comfort Products” range.
A small number of Hunter thermostats are still produced and available today through retailers like HomeDepot, Menards, and Amazon.
None of these qualify as smart thermostats and the latest models produced are digital programmable models with 5-2 days or 7-day schedules.
If your Hunter thermostat is on the way out, then I highly recommend upgrading to a smart thermostat. They have a lot more features and can ultimately save you money in the long run. Here's a couple to consider.

Hunter does not provide telephone support for thermostats purchased before 2013 so unfortunately, you're on your own.
How to find your Hunter Thermostat model number?
The good thing about locating the model number for Hunter digital thermostats is that the whole process is relatively painless. All you have to do is lift the flap covering the thermostat panel. However, for models like the 44377 that have no covering, you may have to refer to the back of the thermostat panel.
Hunter Thermostat Manual Troubleshooting
If your thermostat is displaying an error message that you've not dealt with before, the best thing to do is turn to the ‘troubleshooting' section of the instructions manual. Not only does this part of the manual list out all the possible error messages you can encounter, but it also lists out how to deal with them. You can also find the number of the technical support group above, in case you require assistance.
Here are a few examples of the kind of problems you'll be able to solve with this section:
- Scrambled or double-display
- No display
- Entire Display Dims
- The program does not change at your desired setting
- Auto/Fan does not turn on
- Heating or cooling does not go on or off
Types of Hunter Thermostats
Hunter is a brand that has been around since 1886, and the company has made all types of home comfort-related products. However, when it comes to Hunter thermostats, you're likely to run into two types:
Non-Programmable Thermostats
This type of thermostat is pretty basic. Its operation is limited to switching the heating/ cooling system on (or off), setting the temperature, and operating the fan. Although, some manual thermostats by Hunter may have additional features like backlighting or a digital display.
Programmable Thermostats
Programmable thermostats offer you the ease of setting the temperature according to a schedule. That means you can set a different temperature for the time you're at home and another for when you're not. There are quite a few options when it comes to programmable thermostats, but with Hunter, you're more likely to find 5-2 or 7-day programmable thermostats.
- 5-2 programmable thermostats allow you to set a series of temperatures for weekdays and a separate set for weekends.
- 7-day programmable thermostats allow you to set different temperature settings for all days of the week.

I have a Hunter model 42204 thermostat. Will it work with my 3 ton single stage heat pump?

Not sure if I have 44150, 44300 or 44350. It came with house when we bought it. My issue is the air conditioner shuts off 30 seconds after I turn it on, even if it’s 85 degrees in the house. Sometimes it won’t even start

I have a cooper & hunter heat pump. On the remote there is a picture of a house. Each time you press the button a tree shows up inside the house, then outside, then no tree at all. Does anybody know what the house symbols mean?

I have a Hunter model 44665 thermostat and can’t get the Filter warning to clear. Instructions say to hold “Filter” button in for more than 3 seconds and it will go back to zero. This has worked in the past, but no longer clears the warning. The thermostat works fine in all other respects. Thank you.

Hi Anna,
It should be as simple as flicking the system switch to the OFF position. The manual for the 44155C thermostat mentions if the system continues to operate when the thermostat is in the OFF position then they recommend replacing the thermostat unit.
