In the United States, consumers generally prefer deadbolt or cylindrical locks over mortise locks mainly because they are more affordable and easier to install, which greatly influence the buying decisions. Consequently, smart mortise locks are commonly perceived as less common alternatives in the market, suggesting that they aren't as broadly adopted.

Mortise locks tend to be more common in commercial settings, such as hotels, dormitories, and office buildings, as they are usually more durable and offer higher security than traditional deadbolts. So a lot of the smart mortise locks on this list are actually commercial locks, which come at a much higher price.

Mortise locks are much more common in Europe, Asia, and Australia due to different building standards and door designs.

In this article, I look at the best smart mortise locks to consider in the US, European and Australian markets.

My Top Pick

If you are looking for the cheapest and fastest way to smarten your existing mortise lock, then I recommend looking at the SwitchBot Smart Lock.

7.8 SwitchBot Smart Lock
Top Retrofit PickBest Retrofit Option that works with existing mortise locks

It’s compatible with single-cylinder mortise locks where the device fits over the thumb-turn. It’s also compatible with a lot of double-cylinders, where you have the key permanently in position, and the device turns it.

Note: Some double-cylinder mortise locks allow a key to be inserted on both sides at the same time, while others might not so you’ll need to check compatibility and test it.

How I Researched

Before I begin, a quick note on how I created this list. When researching and reviewing smart locks, I generally rule out brands that are not well-established. Reputable brands generally have a track record of producing high-quality, reliable, and secure locks. They also typically undergo rigorous testing and certification processes and usually have decent customer service levels.

During my research, I came across lots of strange-sounding brands from overseas markets which tend to have less stringent quality control measures. Examples of brands I ruled out include Dioche, Pawpae, Ldchnh, Xbroom, Bkgdo, Unicor, and Wisepoch to name a few.

It’s not worth taking the risk on something as important as your home security.

Motrise Lock

Differences in Mortise Standards

Another reason to rule out these brands is most of them are designed for Asian mortise lock standards.

Asian and Chinese mortise lock standards differ from those in the US due to variations in design, dimensions, and specifications. They typically have specific measurements, including the distance between the spindle (where the handle is attached) and the keyhole, as well as the size and depth of the mortise pocket in the door.

These measurements may not align with US mortise lock standards, making it challenging to interchange or retrofit Chinese mortise locks into American doors without modification, which could impact your overall home security.

The Nuki Smart Lock 3.0 impresses with its simple installation and user-friendly app control, making it a perfect choice for smart home novices. Its smartphone-controlled, keyless entry system provides an easy way to manage home security.

I like the multiple access options this smart lock provides, such as fingerprint, code, and key, for both convenience and security. It can hold up to 200 fingerprints and IC cards, offering a modern, customized experience for all home entrants. Other Options

Yale

Yale seems to have a wide range of smart mortise locks in various local markets. In my research, I found the YDM4109 in Italy, the Z-Wave YDM3168, and the YMF40+ in Asia, along with a host of options in the Philippines market which you can find here. They also have a specific model for Andersen Patio Doors.

Lockly

Lockly, who invented the randomized number lock, has a number of smart mortise locks in the commercial market, primarily in Australia. You can find out more here.

Aqara

The Aqara Smart Door Lock N100 is a Zigbee Mortise Lock for the International market and is also worth considering. https://www.aqara.com/eu/smart_door_lock_n100.html

Alfred

123securityproducts.com has the Alfred Smart Mortise (ML2-L-BL) stocked which may also be worth investigating.

Important considerations with picking a smart mortise lock

Compatibility with your door size and type

Not all smart locks are designed to fit all door types, so it's crucial to verify that a particular lock will work with your door.

This includes details like door thickness (For example, it can vary between 40mm to 80mm for models like the Samsung SHP-DH538)

Compatibility extends beyond just door thickness and lock styles to also include your existing smart home ecosystem.

Integration with existing smart home systems

Integration with existing smart home systems is crucial when choosing a smart lock.

You want a lock that can easily connect and work seamlessly with the rest of your smart devices for maximum convenience and security. For example, the Yale Mortise Lock is compatible with most Zigbee or Z-Wave automation systems, while the Schlage Mobile Enabled Mortise Lock can be connected wirelessly to smartphones and tablets.

Both these options enable remote control and monitoring of your lock as part of your integrated smart home system.

In addition to compatibility, it's important to understand the features and benefits offered by the locks' integration with your smart home.

For instance, the SwitchBot Retrofit Smart Lock boasts voice control via Amazon Alexa or Siri, making it a useful addition to a smart home setup.

smart mortise locks

Security features, like encrypted communication

Security features, such as encrypted communication, are essential when it comes to choosing a smart mortise lock for your home or business. This ensures that the data transmitted between your smart lock and your access device – such as a smartphone or key fob – is protected from potential hackers or other malicious actors.

For example, the Yale Mortise Lock and the Schlage Mortise Deadbolt Lock both utilize secure communication protocols like Z-Wave and Bluetooth, respectively, providing a safe and reliable connection for managing access to your property.

Additionally, the peace of mind provided by encrypted communication should be complemented by other security features. Biometric authentication, such as fingerprint and facial recognition found in the Schlage Lock, can make it even more difficult for unauthorized individuals to gain entry.

Anti-tampering alarms, like those incorporated in the Samsung Fingerprint Digital Door Lock, can alert you if someone is trying to manipulate or forcefully open your lock.

User-friendly apps and controls

User-friendly apps and controls are crucial when considering a smart mortise lock.

For example, the SwitchBot Retrofit Smart Lock allows for easy, keyless access through its app or voice control via Amazon Alexa or Siri, while the Samsung SHP-DH538 can accommodate up to 100 user codes and fingerprints, making it perfect for large households or business settings.

In addition to providing secure access, these apps often include valuable features like real-time lock status notifications and the ability to share timed passcodes for added convenience.

When it comes to controls, look for smart locks like the Nuki Smart Lock 3.0 that offer multiple access options, including smartphone or smartwatch unlocking via Bluetooth technology.

This level of versatility empowers users by allowing them to use whichever method they find most convenient or secure. Some locks, such as the Ruveno smart door lock, also provide alternate access methods like physical access cards and mechanical keys, ensuring you have a backup plan in case of a lost or dead device.

Battery life and low-power alerts

You don’t want to get locked out of your home because your locks battery ran out! The Yale Conexis Smart Keyless Door Handle is powered by four AA batteries that come included, and it alerts you when the batteries are running low.

Similarly, the Samsung Fingerprint Door Lock, which also operates on batteries, provides an emergency power contact as a backup option.

Low-power alerts are essential in smart locks, as they help you stay proactive and replace the batteries before they run out. Locks like the Nuki Smart Lock 3.0 and the Smart Lock Ruveno Slim, for instance, offer low battery alarms to ensure you don't get locked out due to battery drainage.

Regular monitoring of these alerts can further prevent potential security risks and provide you with peace of mind knowing your home or business is safe and accessible.
