Features of Z-Wave Switches

Z-Wave Hub

A Z-Wave hub is needed for all of these Z-wave switches to work. This gateway or hub is the hardware that serves as the brain of your smart home.

The smart hub varies depending on its purpose. It can be an alarm panel (for smart home security), or a stand-alone hub device.

If you already have a stand-alone hub device, ensure it is Z-Wave supported before purchasing a Z-Wave switch, since Z-Wave switches and dimmers only work with Z-Wave hub controllers.

Every feature offered by your provider is in the Z-Wave hub and it helps the smart home devices fulfill your daily commands. It also connects you to the wireless network.

Z-Wave Range

One common feature of all Z-Wave certified switches is that they extend the range of your Z-Wave network. Z-Wave operates as a mesh network so each device extends the network further.

The usual range for the Z-Wave network is 100 meters or 328 feet. Users are advised to have a Z-Wave device installed every 30 feet or nearer for optimal efficiency.

Note that Z-Wave performs best in open range, as building structures obstruct or reduce the range.

Z-Wave Plus

Z-Wave Plus is a must!

Industry standards change from time to time and the light switch niche is not an exception. More often than not, these timely updates are in the best interest of the consumers.

Switch products with Z-Wave Plus certifications meet certain standards that have shaped the 5th generation hardware platform also known as the ‘Next Gen’ Z-Wave hardware platform.

The new features that are found in Z-Wave accredited devices are extended range, powerful battery capacity, additional RF channels, over the air upgrading (OTA), more bandwidth, advanced plug-n-play network-wide inclusion features, and more.

Create Scenes

Some Z-Wave devices come with scene-creation features that allow you to set the particular scene or lighting mood for a command. The command can be initiated via an app, voice assistant, or by clicking or double-clicking the switch.

This feature can also be used to trigger a particular color when an activity/event is in motion. For instance, when the garage door is open after 10 pm, water is leaking or the security is breached.
