What to Look for in a Zigbee Switch

Zigbee Hub / Controller

A key feature of all smart home devices is interoperability, the ability of digital devices to communicate and initiate an action based on communications. The Zigbee hub/controller serves as the core of all devices, enabling cohesive communication between devices and initiating commands.

Voice and app control is possible because of the Zigbee hub. It is the central device that connects your Google Home or Alexa with your switch. The hub also prevents network congestion by diverting traffic off certain networks like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.  It operates by garnering information and channeling it to the right devices.

Zigbee Range

Zigbee products are known for their low power consumption. The hub conserves energy by restricting the wave transmission distance to 10-100 meters. The range can be affected by power output and the environment.

Aside from their primary functions, Zigbee smart home devices serve as range extenders. Zigbee devices can communicate commands over long ranges (over 100 meters) by transferring data via a mesh network of intermediate devices to get to the distant receiver.

Compatibility with Voice Assistants

There are times when you are too tired to get up from your bed and switch off the light. The most convenient way to switch off your home lights is via voice assistants such as Google Home, Alexa, and Siri.

Most Zigbee switches are not directly compatible with voice assistants. You have to connect the voice assistants with the Zigbee hub. After pairing the voice assistant with the hub, you can use it to control all connected smart devices in your home. Depending on the voice assistant, you can initiate a command by saying the keyword for instance, “Hey Siri, switch off the garage lights”.

Scene-enabled switches

The smart feature you should look out for when choosing a switch is the scene-creation feature. This feature allows you to preset the lighting condition or mood for a particular command or keyword. You can initiate the command through the Zigbee app, the switch app (if it has one), a voice assistant, or by clicking the switch.

Some switches allow users to change scenes with multiple clicks.   Also, you can also program the switch to trigger specific colors when an activity is occurring. For example, when the security is breached or when the garage door is open after 10 pm.

Zigbee Switch Questions

What is the difference between a Wi-Fi Switch and a Zigbee Switch?

A Wi-Fi switch connects to a wireless network and is controlled via a smartphone app or voice assistant, while a Zigbee switch uses a low-power wireless communication protocol and requires a hub to connect to the network. Wi-Fi switches are more widely compatible and there is usually a great product range available, while Zigbee switches are more energy-efficient, have a longer range due to the mesh network, and can support a larger number of devices.

Conclusion

And that's a wrap on our exploration of the best Zigbee light switches!

As we've seen, Zigbee technology offers a range of benefits when it comes to smart home lighting. With Zigbee light switches, you can control your lights from anywhere, set schedules and scenes, and even integrate your lights with other smart devices in your home. Plus, Zigbee's low power consumption and mesh networking capabilities make it an efficient and reliable option for smart home lighting.

We've highlighted some of the top Zigbee light switches on the market, each with its own unique features and capabilities. Ultimately, when choosing a Zigbee light switch, it's important to consider factors such as compatibility with your smart home system, the type of switch you need (e.g. dimmer, on/off, etc.), and your personal style and preferences.

We hope this guide has been helpful in your search for the perfect Zigbee light switch for your home. With the right switch in place, you'll be well on your way to enjoying the convenience and comfort of smart home lighting!

There is no mention of dimmer features. I am looking for, Zigbee, 3-way dimmer switch for my 60yo home. I do not assume a “switch” is a dimmer.

The Enbrighten Zigbee Dimmer switch and the Add-On switch can work together to achieve 3-way dimming. This switch configuration differs from mechanical 3-way switches in that it utilizes the traveler wire solely to communicate with the main switch, rather than using it to transmit power.
