Honeywell thermostat not working? Whether it is showing a blank screen, not heating or cooling, displaying an error code, or just behaving oddly — this guide covers every common problem across all Honeywell and Honeywell Home (Resideo) thermostat models.
Quick Diagnostic: What Is Your Thermostat Doing?
- Blank screen / no display — see Fix 1: Replace Batteries
- Display on but no heating or cooling — see Fix 2
- Cool On or Heat On flashing — see Fix 3 (normal 5-minute delay)
- Wait message — see Fix 3 (normal compressor delay)
- Error code (E1, E2, etc.) — see our Honeywell error code guide
- Wi-Fi not connecting — see Fix 5
Fix 1: Blank Screen — Replace the Batteries
A blank screen is almost always dead or weak batteries. Most Honeywell thermostats use 2 x AA or 2 x AAA batteries. Replace with fresh alkaline batteries. Do not use rechargeable batteries as they provide slightly lower voltage which can cause issues. The thermostat should wake up within 30 seconds.
Note: hardwired models (T9, T10, Lyric) get power from the C-wire. If these show a blank screen, check your breaker panel for a tripped HVAC breaker.
Fix 2: Display On But No Heat or Cool
- Confirm the System switch is set to HEAT or COOL, not OFF
- Check that the setpoint is above room temperature for heat (or below for cool)
- Wait 5 minutes for the compressor delay (Fix 3)
- Check that the furnace power switch is ON (usually a wall switch near the unit)
- Check the air filter — a severely clogged filter can cause the system to shut down
Fix 3: Cool On / Heat On Flashing or Wait Message
This is normal behaviour, not a fault. Honeywell thermostats include a built-in 5-minute compressor delay to protect AC compressors from short-cycling damage. Simply wait 5 minutes and the system should start. If it never starts after 5 or more minutes, check the breaker and system power switch.
Fix 4: Check the Breaker and HVAC Power
- Go to your electrical panel and look for the HVAC or furnace breaker
- If it is tripped (middle position), switch it fully to OFF then back to ON
- Check the power disconnect switch near your furnace or air handler
- Some systems have a secondary safety switch on the condensate drain line
Fix 5: Wi-Fi Not Connecting (T9, T10, Lyric, RTH9585)
Honeywell smart thermostats support 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only. Separate your 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands if they share the same network name, and connect the thermostat to the 2.4GHz network specifically. See our full guide: Honeywell Thermostat Wi-Fi Setup: Proven Tips for All Models.
Fix 6: Factory Reset the Thermostat
- T6 Pro: Menu (hold 5 sec) then Installer Options then Reset then Factory
- T9 / T10 Pro: Settings then Reset then Factory Reset in the app
- RTH6360 / RTH7560: Remove batteries, press any button for 5 seconds, reinsert batteries
- VisionPRO 8000: Hold FAN and UP arrows together for 3 seconds
- Lyric T6R: Settings then Reset then Restore Factory Settings
