Most smart switches require a neutral wire — but older homes often do not have one at the switch box. The good news: there are now excellent smart switches designed specifically for no-neutral wiring.
How to Check if You Have a Neutral Wire
Turn off the breaker, remove the switch cover, and pull the switch out. If you see a white wire connected to the switch terminal (not just tucked into the back of the box), you have a neutral. If you only see black, red, or bare copper wires, you do not.
Best Smart Switches That Work Without a Neutral Wire
1. Lutron Caseta PD-6ANS — Best Overall
Lutron Caseta switches use Lutron's proprietary Clear Connect RF technology rather than Wi-Fi, meaning extremely low standby draw. Compatible with Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit via the Lutron Smart Bridge (required, around $80).
2. GE CYNC Smart Switch (No Neutral)
Operates on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi without a hub. One of the most affordable no-neutral options. Compatible with Alexa and Google Home. Works well with LED bulbs rated 25W or higher.
3. Leviton Decora Smart Switch (No-Neutral Version)
Available in Wi-Fi and Z-Wave versions. The Wi-Fi version integrates with Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit. Reliable and widely available in hardware stores.
4. Sonoff ZBMINIL2 — Best for Home Assistant
A tiny Zigbee relay that installs behind your existing switch without replacing the physical switch. No neutral required. Works with Home Assistant, SmartThings, and Hubitat. At around $12, one of the most affordable options available.
5. Shelly 1 (Wi-Fi Relay)
Installs behind your existing switch. Supports 240V as well as 120V. Compatible with Home Assistant, Alexa, and Google Home.
Minimum Load Requirements
No-neutral switches draw a tiny amount of standby current through the light bulb. They typically require a minimum load of 25W or more of LED. Very low wattage LED bulbs (under 5W) may cause flickering. Always check the manufacturer's compatibility list for your specific bulb before purchasing.
